On the 27th of September 2017, the supervisory board of the voestalpine approved the construction of the new special steel mill on the site of Kapfenberg. The preliminary works for the infrastructure, construction site, as well as structural measures for the flood protection will be started this year or rather are already in the implementation phase. On a plant site with the size of six soccer fields the world’s most advanced special steel production facility will be built in a three-year construction period. Particular attention, when planning the special steel works, was paid to environmental protection. Air- and wastewater treatment plants are state of the art and meet the highest environmental specifications. In addition, powerful heat recovery plants help to reduce emissions. After the planned start-up of the new special steel mill at the end of 2021, the existing old special steel mill will be shut down.
